Hi! My name is Geanne Krawchuk, and I am a Clinical Counsellor in Saskatchewan.
I started my career in 2012 by studying Psychology through the University of Saskatchewan. After struggling with my own mental health as a teenager, I was curious to know how to overcome feelings of depression and anxiety - as it was something I lived with on a day to day basis. I wanted to learn how to heal myself, and how to pick up tools and techniques along the way to also help others who struggled with their mental health.
In 2017, I completed my B.A. in Psychology through the University of Saskatchewan. At this point, I fell in love with psychology completely and wanted to expand upon what I had learned as a bachelor’s student by becoming a counsellor – which is a goal I had in mind as I always wanted to do something that helped other people. After seeing the lack of opportunities to get into the mental health stream in Saskatchewan, I applied for the M.A. in Counselling Psychology through Yorkville University so that I could balance my work and educational life without having to leave the province of Saskatchewan.
Before I completed my master's degree, I worked for the non-for profit organization, the Adoption Support Centre of Saskatchewan as the Administrative Assistant. This position grew my passion for helping individuals, children, and family systems. I also learned how families navigate the foster care and adoption systems in our province. In addition, I gained experience in learning more about systemic issues in the province such as addictions, poverty, intergenerational trauma, infertility, parenting, and decolonization.
In early 2021, I completed my M.A. in Counselling Psychology through the University of Yorkville (right in the heart of the pandemic, and after having to put off my practicum placement for a year due to the unpredictability of COVID-19). To complete my degree, I worked with Family Service Saskatoon to support diverse individuals as a counsellor. In this role, I often worked with clients through the Ministry of Social Services and provided Rapid Access Counselling services in Saskatoon and Martensville. I also co-facilitated several therapeutic groups: When Anger Gets in the Way of Parenting, Adult Anxiety and Depression group, Invisible Scars: Exploring Emotional, Verbal and Psychological Abuse (Intimate Partner Violence), and Co-Parenting.
At the end of 2021, I decided to move towards private practice counselling to learn more about myself and my style of therapy/teaching, and I worked as an independent contractor in Saskatoon until the end of November 2022. I also had the opportunity of going back to the Adoption Support Centre of Saskatchewan part time in February 2022 to help the organization as the Office Manager for 8 months to help with their branding and name change of the Evermore Centre. This involved intensive work on revamping the organization’s website, moving towards tangible Truth and Reconciliation, training new staff in the office, and helping to throw the Open House event to celebrate all of the changes within the organization. It also involved running the Adult Adoptee Support Group across Saskatchewan to give Adult Adoptees a place to meet, share their stories, and connect with each other.
In 2023, I worked in a position for the Northern Health Region as a Mental Wellness and Recovery Practitioner in Flin Flon, MB. I worked in the north to provide services to individuals with urgent needs and diagnoses. I worked alongside a psychologist and psychiatrist to provide services to those who struggled with more severe mental health challenges such as bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, schizophrenia, and high suicidal ideation.
My hope in the future is to write a book on mental health that is affordable and accessible to the average person. Although therapy is a great outlet to use for healing – I also want to document and share some of the information I have learned over the past 10 years to help community members with moving towards healing. I also plan to take EMDR training to learn about more of the mind and body connection, and hope to supervise students one day.
